For some reason, I can't form a mental image of that "duct between the
furnace and the chimney."  I thought the purpose of a basement furnace
was to supply heat to the rooms above, but I suppose, based on the type of
heating oil used, the fumes would have to vent somewhere.  We don't have
that down here.  (-:
