it was written using the "compose" method while using the cp437 wrapper... it
did write the correct byte, 0x94, to the message base file... what i think i've
found is that golded is not sending the message body contents through to the
utf8 subsystem for display properly... while it is translating, it is
displaying the translation directly instead of the translated glyph...

i just checked my raw message base to confirm the proper character was written
to the message base... that one and the "a with a roof top" that ward asked
about... i don't remember if i have my character set control line set
properly... i'll have to check that... it should be CP437...
