  I've read where the world's population in general is something like one
generation from returning to the Dark Ages, as it did after the fall of
Rome in 400 (something or other, muttering).
  Those who knew how to build, operate, upkeep, etc all that Rome had
provided (roads, aqueduct's, buildings) were gone and no one knew much
about them so they fell into disrepair.
  Think of all the things we use on a regular basis and having people with
knowledge to make, repair, and use them.
