I really hadn't seen TOS since the 60s, but I decided to break in our new DISH DVR by catching the series from the beginning on TVLand. They're obviously showing the non-improved version (though the prints are good), and I've noticed quite a few things. 1) The f/x are much worse than I remembered. It's not that the models or the matting are bad, but there are scads of perspective problems, and the Enterprise frequently seems to be caught in a bad crosswind. 2) The preproduction universe building was bloody awful. In the early days, neither the United Federation of Planets nor Starfleet had been invented, and Spock's human blood came from the marriage of "one of [his] ancestors". 3) A good many classic episodes were written by freelancers. 4) It took a while to find Kirk's fingerprints. On the other hand, the show holds up pretty well, and and I still agree, as I did then, with John W. Campbell's decision that "Star Trek" was the Real Thing. -- John W.
