I lived in SE Colorado in the early '70s and once a week had to make a
160 round trip from Trinidad, where I lived, to Lamar (or La Junta). It was
a two lane road, straight as an arrow. No lights at all once out of either
of the two towns, except for a farm house way off in the distance.
So one had about 60 miles, one way, with no electric lights and the sky
was full of stars.
Most of the time these trips were made in winter so standing around in
the cold star gazing wasn't an option I cared to use at the time. :)
