Well, I'm sorry I don't know much about these worms, but I will tell you
is:
I once had a terrerium in a 30 gallon (long) tank....it had soil, and
plants...and a pool of water on one side with a huge peice of drift wood
sticking out. I had spanish moss hanging from the wood, and I also took some
plastic aquarium plants that were colorful yet natural looking and stuch them
into some small holes in the wood, and it made a hanging garden effect. In
the tank I had Live crickets, A large Tiger Salamander that I caught in the
wild. A large toad from the pet store, a leopard frog from the pet store, a
green tree frog (the kind with the suction-cup like hands) and in the pool of
water I had an airstone with an airline to make bubbles. In the pool there
were a couple of guppies, a small comet goldfish, and a crayfish I caught
wild. There were also two small anoles that liked to perch on the wood. It
was a very beautiful sight. Oh yes, and a baby western painted turtle
hatchling.
About a month or two after setting up the tank, I noticed very small white
worms everywhere crawling up the side of the tank, I tried to clean
everything out and figure out what this was. About a week later, I noticed my
Tiger Salamander was bloated and very inactive. He usually burrowed into the
soil, and came out to feed on crickets. But he was just laying there on top
near a plant. A day or two later, He was dead, and it looked almost as if his
belly had exploded, and there were thousands of these little tiny whit worms
everywhere. So, I removed all the animals from this tank and separated them
into other tanks, and clean out the 30 gallon tank, and watched the other
animals. None of them showed signs of parasites or disease. To this day, I
still don't know what these worms were, what caused them, or how I could have
prevented them. I'm assuming they were some type of parasitic worm that came
from the wild. I have never since, tried to set up another tank like that,
out of fear or my ignorance causing another case of a dead salamander....
I'm sorry I could not be of any help, but I just wanted you to know that your
experience is not a lone case.
                    -Phil
