Richard,

If you don't have an Opteron based workstation setup for testing by now =
you should be ashamed of yourself! AMD CPUs have been kicking Intel's =
butt on floating point, which as I remember AutoCad thrives on, forever. =
Plus for the same CPU throughput, the AMD chip uses much less power, =
making for a quiter and more energy efficient system. Another major plus =
is the AMD 64 bit CPU's integrated memory controller which just blows =
away anything from Intel as far as memory access times. As AutoCad tends =
to use very large datasets, another real plus.

So any of you guys keep close tabs on the processor wars between
  Intel and AMD?

I've always been an Intel shop, largely based on past experiences with
AutoCAD. AFAIK AMD is widely used in CAD machines these days with
  great results.

It is pretty difficult to decide which way to go, at least it's not
clear to me yet. My tech, who comes from, what else, a gaming
background really likes the AMDs. I just want to get the best
performance and reliability with a nod to 'bang for the buck.'

  Thoughts?
