Subject: [drakelist] LED replacing lightbulbs

Hi all,
Thanks to the very kind assistance of Don WB5HAK and Rob PE9PE, my TR7 is
now again close to it's condition when it left the factory :))
Now that I had the TR7 apart, I took the oppertunity to find a solution
for the annoying problem of the ever breaking light-bulbs. Especially
replacement of the one behind the dial is a big job as the entire DR7 has
to be lifted. Also the supply of bajonet lightbulbs is not eternel I
suppose...
So I decided to go for a LED-solution. The white LEDS used in modern
flashlights are very light-intensive. The only problem is that their beam
is very focussed. So what I did is cutting the front side of the LED
untill it was flat, keeping 1 mm plastic between the LED and the front. I
made the surface rough with sandpaper and in this way the light "diffuses"
very nicely. I installed it in the house of the old bulb, a resistor of
220 Ohms in series.
Result is very very nice, even the typical Drake "blue glow" is now much
more intense! Highly recommended though, so thought I should mention it to
the list.
Best 73 and see you on the waves with my "new" TR7!
