My guess:  Any R4C selling at that price has all the Sherwood mods.
That is, it's a modified receiver and can be expected to perform
better than an original R4C and is in perfect condition today.  These
receivers command a premium.  I saw one sell for just under a grand
a few weeks ago on eBay.

It's not so much that the R4C is a lot better than the B, but that these
mods only apply to the C receiver, and that the receiver has recently
been tuned by an expert.  I'm not seeing these prices on garden variety
R4C's.
