I would start out with resistors _and_ pots,  otherwise you'll find that
only a smallish portion of the pots range is going to be usable,  before
you go into overload distortion.  Start out with a rough approximation, 
and go from there.  And yeah,  I'd use audio-taper pots.

I'll bet it did!  :-)

Our tv has a five or six band EQ built into it,  and sounds pretty good
when stereo signal is present.

Personally,  the next time I shop for a tv,  I plan to get one that has
both audio and video connections,  if I can find one.
