Unless you have a really wimpy UPS, I would go ahead and plug the monitor
into it. That's how I have it set up at work. That way:

a. you can continue working uninterrupted through short
   (< 60 seconds) interruptions
b. you can see what you are doing in case you need to save
   what you were working on when it appears that the outage
   is going to be extended.

You can always press the power button on the monitor to turn it off.
