TA> Hello Christopher!
TA> Yes as long as you don't take information that is only presented in a
TA> novel and try to force it down the throats of other fans that it is
TA> most definately the truth.
Don't look at me! I'm the least likely shove it down your
throat type! :-) I'm all for just tossing the whole "canon" issue to
the wolves.
TA> fact that Data had command of the E in the future to mean that in the
TA> aired world Will Riker will not be the next captain but that Data will.
I agree. It's not likely that series would be shaped around the
book. OTH, I try to avoid pinning a characters future time line down when
I write, preferring to leave some room there...unless I have a real good
reason.
TA> That happens very rarely. But the novels sometimes contradict each
TA> other the very next book. And they can contradict the TV episodes.
Because they have the advantage of having a single writing team,
versus the novel series that has twenty or so writers involved with it. It
only gets problematic when they don't use the advantage.
TA> That is not what JPH was saying.
I know, but I felt the point needed making. :-)
TA> Perhaps canon isn't the best term for it. Maybe the idea of an order
TA> of precedence which I use is better. If a movie or episode says
TA> something and a book says something that can not be resolved with the
TA> aired version, the aired version comes out ahead in my mind.
But why? To soothe Paramount's ruffled feathers?
For
TA> example, Strangers from the Sky (a novel) says that Earth's first
Read it, thought it was very well done.
TA> contact came with Vulcans who crashed into the ocean. The movie First
TA> Contact shows a completely different scenario. IMHO the FC version is
TA> the one that happened not the book version.
Having not seen the movie I cannot comment on it directly, however,
would it have hurt TPTB's feelings that much to credit the author of SFTS,
nd
remained within the parameter's set forth by the novel? At least Pocket
ooks
gives credit where credit is due, using footnotes and other methods to
illustrate where the motion pictures fit in along the novel series to help
the readers get a general feel for the continuity of both medias.
