    The problem in the south is a lot harder to beat - but one trick I
    tried to beat algae was just a couple of clean copper pennies
    where the water collects.  Copper is extremely toxic to algae - and
    just the trace amount from the pennies seems to be enough to keep
    things clear for a while.
