Protected mode is a flat memory model. There are so segmentation limits so
therefore you can allocate as much memory as you want to an object.
ie. trying to allocation a 1meg buffer in real mode is impossible because of
the 64k real mode segment limits. You can ofcourse switch to protected mode,
increase the segment limits then switch back but this is very slow and isn't
worth the overhead.
All new programs are protected mode, real mode is rare now. I am pretty sure
bc++ 5.0 supports protected mode. (i'm not sure, i've never used it).
nb, all those programs that have that "DOS4/GW" banner means that they are
protected mode.
Note that to get into protected mode you need an extender and kernel.
... Are 12 lines at 1,200bps as good as 1 line at 14,400bps?
