Chris,
Several things can increase your dive time underwater.  Most notably, as you 
gain more and more experience, your SAC rate (Surface Air Consumption Rate) 
will decrease as you get more comfortable in the water.
Other thoughts that might increase your bottom time is to make sure you can 
maintain your neutral buoyancy.  The more "out of buoyancy" you are, the more 
you fight to maintain your position in the water and you use more energy/air.
Other ideas are, who is the dive leader between you and your buddy.  Set the 
pace at your comfort level. If your buddy is leading, and you are swimming 
hard to keep HIS comfortable pace, you will use more air/energy.
Just some thoughts.
