JNS originally supported Dole simply as the only viable option to
Clinton. He didn't want to see Clinton re-elected and presumed Dole would
be at least neutral from a gro-gun perspective. Given that he still
considers a Libertarian unelectable (until the party builds up more of a
base), Dole was his only choice. Thus even when Dole said the repeal was
moot, two days before the debate you read, Schulman still grudgingly
supported him. (Apparently having misssed Dole's earlier comments about a
nationwide instant check system for all firearms.) So at the time of the
debate, Schulman was being forced to say practically "Forget your
principles and vote for Dole as the lesser of two evils."
When Dole said that he'd actually oppose and even veto a repeal, Schulman
could no longer consider Dole to be at least neutral, and immediately
endorsed Harry Browne.
At the convention, Dole has come out slightly more conservative than
people expected. But in his acceptance speech he still endorsed the
nationwide instant check on all firearms, which is more than enough
reason for me to say he isn't our friend. If the Republicans elected with
him were to follow his lead (as many expect they would), he is worse for
us than Clinton. Given that, we really are further ahead supporting
Browne even if he can't win.
But yes, this is getting stranger by the minute. Perot taking votes away
from Clinton, according to recent polls? Nader running to the left of
Clinton on the Green ticket? Dole may win with a plurality (less than 50%
of the electoral college). If so, hopefully it'll put "the fear of God"
into him. Or just maybe a real longshot like Browne could win this year.
But I certainly can't guess the outcome at this point.
