you're suggesting .gif files, but those files are 256 color max, and
you're suggesting that you dislike 256 colors (or maybe you mean
320x200x256... btw, a plain vga can do 360x480x256 and various other
modes too -- see Second Reality and such programs)
.bmp can handle 24-bit color, and so can .tga; .ppm is 24-bit color
only. These are non-compressed formats.
.png is the .gif of the future; it can handle non-destructive
compression, and 24-bit color, and has more features than .gif (except
animation, but for that .gif is not the best anyway). There is a freely
available lib for that, it's called libpng. It can compile on dos16,
dos32, w95, wnt, os/2, and the zillions of unix systems (linux,
solaris, irix, bsd, etc). You can get it fairly easily by FTP or HTTP.
.jpeg is a strange destructive compression. It doesn't even relies on a
notion of number of colors, so i could not say whether it's 24-bit,
18-bit, 30-bit, or anything, because it can't be said... it cuts the
image into little squares and stores color waves instead of pixels (i
could give more details if that doesn't make sense). There is a libjpeg
available in the same fashion for the same machines (or so).
