subject: QUESTIONS, Hb 12:1-3

Greetings, Friends:
Below is a sample of the page of questions we prepare for
use in the Bible study portion of a small group meeting. If it
works out, each Sunday we'll circulate a page of questions, based
on the preaching text of our sermon that day. The questions are
intended to generate 30-45 minutes' discussion.
This will be most relevant to our own church's small
groups, of course; but we've deliberately used our personal
letterhead so other churches can use this material for small
group or family Bible study, or, for personal reflection.
As with Fresh Manna, you hereby have our permission to
print up to 1,000 copies of any issue of Bible Study Questions,
as is, and unedited, without contacting us; provided that you
print the whole page, including our letterhead. As with Fresh
Manna, we do of course retain our copyright to this material; all
rights reserved. To print, use any 10 cpi font, and set all
margins as close to zero as possible.
If this is of interest to you, we'll be glad to circulate
these question sheets in the same BBS echoes and conferences as
Fresh Manna, and to Fresh Manna readers on our e-mail mailing list.
If it isn't of interest, of course, just let us know, and
we'll set up separate mailing lists for the two publications,
"Fresh Manna" and "Bible Study Questions", so you can receive
either one or the other, or both, as you prefer.
May God bless you greatly as you study His word!

          BIBLE STUDY QUESTIONS, 14/11/1997 ................ HEBREWS 12:1-3
          1) It would seem that HEBREWS was written to encourage Jewish
Christians facing the danger of persecution, to remain true to
Christ. HEBREWS 11 gives encouraging examples from the lives of
the heroes of the faith in the Old Testament Church. In view of
this, why do you think HEBREWS 12 begins, "Wherefore, seeing we
also are compassed about with [/surrounded by] so great a cloud
of witnesses ..." [HEBREWS 12:1a (KJV)]?

          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          2) HEBREWS 12:1b-2a continues, "Let us run the race set before
us, looking away unto Jesus, the author [/founder/originator] and
finisher [/perfecter] of our faith" (lit.).
          (a) What are some ways we "look away unto Jesus"?
          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          (b) How does this help us endure persecution, and other trials?
          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          .................................................................
          3) HEBREWS 12:3 exhorts us, "For consider him that endured such
contradiction [/hostility/rebellion] of sinners against himself"
(KJV). How does considering the way Christ stood his ground in
the face of persecution, fortify us to follow His great example?
