subject: Tent catapillers

JV> MM> Are tent catapillers just a nuisance, or can they damage a tree?
JV> If they damage a tree, does anyone know of a good (preferably safe)
JV> method of getting rid of them? They're cocooning a couple of trees
JV> in our backyard.
JV>
JV> So far as I know, they only eat the leaves. We had an infestation up
JV> north some time ago, where they ate everything in sight. They'd strip
JV> a whole tree almost overnight. The leaves did come back.
So far, there aren't too many tents, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
JV> There is a natural enemy that you can spray. I think it's called Bacillus
JV> Thurengesis. Dunno if it's sold around here. I saw a couple bottles at
JV> Big Lots last year. Must have gotten them from a business that went belly
JV> up.
We've got Big Lots around here too, but BT is sold most everywhere. If they
look like they're taking over the trees, I'll get some.
Thanks, Michele
