MW>Flying the Line - and eventually being
MW>sucked in to instructing others. In Air Canada (thank God)
MW>our policy was to not have simulator only instructors. We
MW>took our trainees through the simulator, flight training
MW>around the patch, and then what we called Line
MW>Indoctrination, where we took them out on the line until we
MW>felt they were ready to cope on their own. This had the
MW>double-edged effect of allowing them to have the continuity
MW>of the same instructor all the way, and kept we instructors
MW>up to speed on what was happening on the line.
Murry, we did the same and I did the same. It was a wonderful
experience and kept you up on everything.
MW>Sadly, my son, who has been an Air Canada pilot since 1974
MW>tells me that the bean counters are winning and they now
MW>have simulator instructors who have never flown the
MW>aircraft. Can't afford to pay real live line pilots to train
MW>others at the going rates!
I think they are all doing that now. At my Company they use what they
call Sim-Pilot Instructors to do the initial training. This is the
Preflight checks, Running Checklist and initial operation for about the
first 5 sessions. They then get a break then come back for a 5 day Key
that is with a line qualified Captain Check Airman that takes them
through the Rating Ride. Then it changes somewhat due to scheduling.
The new Capt or FO then gets an IOE (Initial Operating Experience) with
the same type Check Airman for a 3 day trip then when the Check Airman
is satisfied that he is fully qualified and comfortable then he is
released. There are some restrictions placed on the new Crew Complement
for a short period of time. That's basically the program.
MW>We're here for awhile longer this year - I'll try and say
MW>hello next Tuesday.
Where are you going to in Canada for the Summer Murry? Keep in touch
with us during the Summer from Canada will ya?....Jim.....
