As someone who has only been watching the current series full fledged 
(had watched the 4th Doctor years ago once in awhile when it was on 
public television here) since 2005, my impression so far has been not 
only is the TARDIS a living, sentient being, but she is also the one 
directing the Doctor here and there, wherever he is needed--there is 
some innate connection  between the two, so deep I don't think even he 
has any idea of the depth.
