Ok, you're an ex-navy radar man, some say. Consider the police radar gun.
When they point it at an 'oncoming' car, the wavelength of the bounced
signal gets shorter and shorter as the car approaches. The radar gun's
receiver is capable of determining the velocity of the car in this way.
The police officer need not retune the radar gun's receiver as the car
approaches. The wavelength changes state, but it is still read at the same
frequency that it was emitted.
