I grew up in Florida, and experienced multiple hurricanes of varying
strengths. Somehow, it never bothered me. I once slept through one
that was strong enough to cause every road into town to be closed,
although I don't recall any damage to property near me then.
They can be very devastating, but not without warning -- giving people
time to do something about it (e.g. board up and/or get out). OTOH,
there is not much warning with a tornado, and little one can do.
They tend to be stronger than hurricanes, albeit more isolated in the
area of destruction. I'd fear tornados more than hurricanes.
