I've seen such things in Southern California. The secret to using them in
the south is to get creative with the ventilaton system. In summer they
can be quit capable of keeping tempertures reasonablly cool and in winter,
quite warm. As you know, heat rises, so having a vent system that draws
cool air from a pit under the house can keep the room quite cool. Change
the vent system for winter heating and it's quite comfortable too.
