Not necessarily. If you think about it, heat rises and an extra foot in
ceiling height would be good for summer time heat and air conditioning.
Not so good if you have to heat that extra foot, say if you live in an
area where it really gets cold.
My parents lived in an old 3 story house with 10ft ceilings, up north. My
dad put in ceiling fans and reversed them in winter, pushing the heated
air down to the floor level. Their place was always cozy in the winter
time.
My shop's office in San Diego had an HVAC unit on the roof that was fed
into ceiling high vents. The ceiling also had the return vent (which was
really stupid, IMO), so the floor of that office was always cold, winter
or summer. My receptionist complained about that, so I put in two floor
vents below the ceiling high vents and using the wall studs as an air
duct, I switched them season to season. In fall/winter, I closed off the
ceiling high vents and opened the bottom vents. She no longer complained
about her feet being cold. In summer, I reversed the vents and fed cold AC
air to the floor. She never complained about that either. Then there was
the problem of how to get her to answer the phone and be able to identify
a real customer from the gazillion salemen. But that's a different story.
