 company, on Thursday reported quarterly profit surged, pushed up by

Reuters - Verizon Communications Inc. , the largest U.S.
 telecommunications company, said on Thursday its third-quarter earnings
 rose on strong sales of wireless services and high-speed Internet
 lines.

    Stock futures fall on GM woes (Reuters)

Reuters - U.S. stock futures declined, pointing to a weaker market open
 on Thursday, on concern about General Motors Corp. , the world's
 largest automaker, after it was subpoenaed by the Securities and
 Exchange Commission as part of an investigation into GM's accounting.

 earnings jumped, supported by sales of more expensive tires and price

 to wrest back the initiative on the economy with a defiant speech that

 stock soared 10 percent on the news.

    Amazon Shares Slump on Holiday Sales Outlook (AP)

AP - Amazon.com Inc.'s shares tumbled nearly 14 percent Wednesday after
 the Internet retailer startled Wall Street with a soft sales outlook
 for the holiday shopping season.
