I wish that were true!  ;-)  I have a 20 gallon tank that fish do very well 
in.  Before the Discus there were a variety of other fresh water fish that 
did very well.  Just happened across the right combination of parts, water 
and plants to make a very stable environment.  More pure dumb luck and "book 
learning" than any expertise.  My 50 gallon tank is ok and I'm not killing 
any livestock, but I have not hit the level of stability of the old 20 
llon.
I am new to this hobby but I can see why the "old timers" are reluctant to 
change from a combination that works to the newest and greatest invention.
