With two parties, it doesn't tend to leave a lot of room for options. They have
to work out a lot of compromises if there isn't a decisive majority of one or
the other party in office.
In this era, there are very few of either party willing to do so.
Undoubtedly, once the dust finally settles on this elections, all of the
recounts of the states with very close margins, legal challenges of fraud, etc.
that have become fairly common now, if indeed Biden is elected, he's already
promised to undo many things that the current administration has done.
I'm not saying that's good or bad, but focusing on that instead of the
multitude of other things that need to be addressed does little to make any
real progress to make things better for the people you claim to represent.

Because between the time I was a student, back in the 80's, and now the focus
has changed. It's no longer We are Americans, instead it's African-American,
Hispanic-American, whatever divisive term you can come up with. Instead of
celebrating what we have in common, and learning to understand and appreciate
our differences, everything is a point of contention.
