Yep.

In Newfoundland and Labrador Discovery Day is celebrated on the
Monday nearest June 24th in commemoration of the discovery of
North America June 24, 1497 by John Cabot. (Columbus only bumped
into the West indies, not the whole continent, and the Vikings and
Natives get overlooked.)

In the Yukon it is celebrated on the Monday nearest August 17th in
commemoration of the start of the Klondike Gold Rush. Gold was
discovered on August 16, 1896 at Bonanza Creek by George Carmack and
his (Native) partners Skookum Jim Mason and Tagish Charlie. The
mining claim was registered August 17 in George Carmack's name.

Two different events; two different holidays.

The Northwest Territories celebrates National Aboriginal Day on the
solstice, June 21, and the rest of the country takes off Aug. 1 for no
particular reason and calls it Civic Holiday.

Cheers

YK Jim
