You just answered your own question.  Both sides have a lot of idiotic corrupt
idiots, so neither one is particularly appealing.

The furthest sides are so polarizing and vehement, that the result is some of
each side are voting for the other out of spite.  So nothing is truly gained by
either side.

The two party system has been so ingrained into the minds of people, that
except in rare instances, they are immediately dismissed as at best useless, at
worst, blamed by both sides for costing them the election.

Both sides blame each other for everything.  There's no one that says "As a
nation, we've messed up. We need to come together and fix this."
