I'll just add that it is not unusual for an actor to give a character some trick of behavior or physical mark, to make the character more real. Olivier claimed that he could never figure out who his character was until he'd sculpted the nose. I don't do that sort of thing as a rule, but when I was playing Duke Frederick in "As You Like It", I couldn't bring him into focus until I made him obsessed with cleaning his fingernails. I think Bill Mumy's belief that Lennier was in love with Delenn started as something similar, and I suspect that the same thing was responsible for Damian London giving his character a bit of a stammer. -- John W.
