File servers serve files. Application servers act as dedicated servers for,
well, applications. :) People may or may not log on to the application
server, but it's primary purpose is to provide application services, not file
and print services for people.
A SQL server that people don't log on to directly would be an example of an
application server. Web servers? May be considered an application server.
Email? Ditto.
If the application server also serves files, then the machine is acting as
both an application server and a file server. I have a Novell server running
Btrieve that people run the accounting application from. That machine should
be considered both, since it's running a database and serving files.
