I don't claim to be a Discus expert, I just have a couple that I have not
managed to kill ... yet. :-) I have a clown loach in with mine now and have
had other non-aggressive fish. Be sure that the fish you put with the Discus
will do well in low PH. Stay away from tiger barbs! I have also had a
Chinese algae eater in with the Discus and noticed some mouth shaped marks on
the Discus. Obviously they did not play well together.
As for the water.
Start with very soft water - RO or distilled. Get the PH down to 6 to 6.5.
That should not be a problem with soft water but take some time to be sure it
will stay there.
Temperature needs to be about 82 F.
I add Kent Discus Essential to the water ever week since I have a carbon
filter on the tank.
Discus seem to like lots of plants and cover in the tank but don't forget
they take a lot of room to turn around and swim. Don't make the cover too
dense. They also like a quiet tank without a lot of activity around it. I
have mine in a bedroom. For what it is worth, mine have a dark appearance
when they are stressed and get more colorful as the environment gets better.
Take Care
Jim
