DR> With my own kids, I'm just fussy about which ones they watch. For the
DR> most part, my kids don't watch anything on network (CBS, NBC, ABC, or
DR> FOX) television. They can watch most anything on Disney Channel (which
DR> comes as part of our cable package, now, no "extra" charge), they can
DR> watch selected cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nickolodeon - but my
DR> husband and I retain "veto rights". Right now Jennifer is watching
I hope you retain "veto rights"! ;) Some of the cartoons on Disney
and Nick are ones that used to be on Fox, and the Cartoon Network has
some of the worse cartoons (but I think I read that it has some good
ones at night.)
It's a shame when we have to veto Disney, because that used to be a
channel that I'd let them watch in the afternoon. Now, if it's on, it's
on PBS.
DR> She's home because everyone complained that her cough was too loud.
 DR> It's mostly allergies, I think.)
That happens with Mary too. She's 10 and has a lot of allergy
complications. She doesn't have severe allergies, just noisy. It goes
well with her constant motion, though! :)
DR> I'm also fussy about how much tv is watched. An hour a day for the
DR> kids is *plenty*. Jennifer and Kristin have taken some flack this year
DR> at school because they don't watch the "mainstream" TV shows, nor do
That has happened with my kids too, but I don't let it bother me, and
they don't seem to let it bother them. They like what they are allowed
to watch, so it hasn't been a problem.
DR> they listen to "mainstream" music. Kristin was laughed at (!) for not
DR> knowing who Madonna is. Jennifer turned in a RAD reading form with
DR> over 3,000 minutes several months in a row. Other kids didn't believe
DR> it. When she replied, "well, I don't watch TV, I read a lot," one
DR> child said, "OOH! How could you *live* without TV???" (She didn't have
DR> an answer, but I supplied one for her to use if needed down the road:
DR> "kids 100 years ago lived just fine without TV".)
My kids seem to do well reading whether the tv is on or not. And during
math class, and recess, on the bus... Mary was getting teased a lot for
reading so much at school, but that isn't something I'd want to curb.
She gets that interest honestly - from both parents! :)
DR> We go out weekends in our camper quite a lot. We are among the few
DR> campers in the RV park that don't have a TV in ours. Even the RV park
DR> check=in clerks are really surprised when they say, "cable tv hookup?"
DR> and we say, "no thanks, we don't have a TV in the camper." (I go out
Wow - I didn't even know they had cable capability at campgrounds! I'd
like a camper someday, but I don't know if I could go without the tv and
the newspaper! :)
DR> in the camper to get *away* from the TV and the telephone.) Our girls
DR> read a lot in the evenings and in the early mornings in the camper.
DR> They also play little travel games together. I can't say it's
DR> completely harmonic (they still fight), but they sure clock in a lot
DR> of hours doing things that aren't related to the TV set.
My kids do too. I just had my sister and her 2 boys here for 2 months
while they were waiting to move into their new place. They got a new
taste of doing things other than vegetating in front of the tv. But one
of the boys told me he couldn't wait to move and watch cartoons again...
and the other added "and 911!" They literally had the tv on 24 hours a
day, and it drove me nuts!
When I first got them, Tim asked me "Do you get TGIF?" when I asked what
it was, I found it is the Friday night line up of tv shows on one of the
networks. I told him that we could get it, but we're too busy to watch
it... and he let it drop.
... If ET married Peter Cetera he'd be ET CETERA.
