Moreover, English is full of diphthongs that are a bitch to sing. 
Vocalic r can be nasty, too. (It also doesn't help that, at least in the 
US, elementary school students are taught the most amazing rubbish about 
the everyday phonetics of their own language.) English is the only 
language I'm comfortable speaking (I'm a typical Yank, that way), but, 
speaking as a semi-pro opera singer, I'd rather do my serious singing in 
almost any other language. (And if I have to sing in English, I'd rather 
use a British than an American accent.)
