Hiya Mike,
On 05-11-97, whilst lying in the gutter of the information super highway, I
heard Mike Bilow whispering to Neil Croft about optical fiber networks,
MB> Saving IP addresses has to be one of the dumbest reasons to buy
MB> equipment. Messing with IP masquerading and such might make sense
MB> for a home network, but it is an insane practice for a corporate
MB> network. IP switching is a reasonable technology, but it is not
MB> intended to be used to solve a shortage of real IP addresses.
It's about to take place at our place to hide our lan from one of our clients
which we manage. We currently manage 5 remote client networks, all with
different addressing scemes to ours.
MB> If you are as stuck as you say, either politically or economically,
MB> then one approach would be to firewall your department from others
MB> within the enterprise. That's hardly the most intelligent approach,
MB> either, but at least you could get away with freely assigning private
MB> (RFC1918) addresses.
Our internal network runs on 10.16.x.y which is I believe free private
addressing. Politics is the main reason for it unfortunately. Remember what
you said about management and MIS. =o)
MB> IP addresses don't cost anything, you know.
True or I wouldn't use it at home. Switching's faster anyway.
