TT> I'm interested in the theory behind surround sound.
There are quite a few different standards and proprietary tricks used to
create surround sound. You're likely thinking of specific Dolby Labs
standards used in many movies. Lucasfilm THX is perhaps one of the best
surround standards. Some "surround" receivers may use a simple delay chip
based reverb effect.
You could always contact Dolby Labs or Lucasfilm for info. If you are
looking for both human audio contacts and some education, attending Audio
Engineering Society conventions could be useful. They rotate among New York,
CA, and Europe on an annual or biannual cycle. If it's on this year, NYC
would be coming up soon (time for me to check, as that's a simple hop down
the local commuter railroad from here).
