AL> I recently happened to witness a steel tank being
AL> filled to 3000 psi by someone unfamiliar with the
AL> equipment. When I realized what had happened, I
AL> noticed that the overpressure relief valve was
AL> pointing in my general direction!
AL>
AL> For future reference, I'd like to know how many psi
AL> it takes to make the overpressure valve pop. Anyone know?
SE> Depends on the size of the tank, whether it's a high-pressure
SE> tank or a "normal" pressure tank, type of burst disk, etc.
SE> All tanks have their operating pressure stamped onto the neck
SE> at the time of manufacture, and most folks filling the tanks
SE> will never fill beyond 10% above that limit.
Well the filling station was a fire hall, and the volunteer
firefighter delegated to do the fill by the fire chief apparently
wasn't very familiar with the way the equipment worked. He was
filling from cascaded tanks, and it soon appeared that he was fuzzy
about what happened. I got one of the other fellows I knew to be a
diver to come have a look, and then found out the tank was filled to
3000 psi. He dropped the pressure to 2500.
