Hi BOb,
Bob Ackley wrote in a message to Richard Webb:
RW> Qwest is one of the worst imho. I get a darned good deal from
RW> bellsouth, even if they are sorry they offered it to me .
BA> Agree about Qwest. When I moved to Plattsmouth in 1975 I moved from
BA> (then) Northwestern Bell to Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph (then one
BA> of the largest non-Bell independents). LT&T provided FAR better
BA> service than NWB, the only problem that the Omaha LATA - just across
BA> the Platte River and to which most of my calls were made - was a LD
BA> call. In Nebraska north of the Platte was Northwestern Bell (now
BA> Qwest) and south of the river was LT&T country.
BA> Some outfit from Arkansas did a hostile takeover of LT&T decades

BA> Many folks in Plattsmouth bought cell phones when they came out and

BA> - so Alltel built a cell tower in
BA> town to defeat that tactic. Alltel also sued (successfully) the Ash

BA> plant in Louisville, NE; the plant is located on the south bank of
BA> the Platte River
BA> and they'd purchased a fishing shack on the north bank and run their
BA> own phone line from the shack across the river to the plant.
sEen that. ILlinois folks used to buy cell phones and use a cell tower
high on a bluff in IOwa to make free calls in IOwa. Il. cell carriers soon
nixxed that.
Friend of mine had a bunch of farm ground on the line between U.S. WEst
(now Qwest) and the little independent phone company covered DAnville and a
couple of small towns. hE had a phone line to his house which would be
qwest, another in an outbuilding which he extended to the house which was
the little independent, that way he could call the school his kids attended
and it wasn't an ld call. YET he could also do business by phone with the
city without ld charges. A musician friend of mine lived just the other
side of same line. HE was a point off my system. USed to bring his laptop
to work, come in a bit earlier, plug modem into phone line, pick up his
mail and drop off before the workday started, take it home t
CAlling areas around Iowa are so screwy due to Qwest, formerly Nw. Bell
then U.s. worst .
Regards,
Richard
