Their diesels don't motivate the train, electric motors do. the diesels
are used to generate electricity to drive those motors.
In a few high-efficiency applications, diesel generated electrical energy
can be stored in rechargeable batteries. In which case, these vehicles can
be considered as a class of hybrid electric vehicle.
