subject: Book on how to program my own LAN

Look at the files in the Crynwr Collection:
   ftp://ftp.crynwr.com/drivers/pktd11.zip
   ftp://ftp.crynwr.com/drivers/pktd11a.zip
   ftp://ftp.crynwr.com/drivers/pktd11b.zip
   ftp://ftp.crynwr.com/drivers/pktd11c.zip
The last three are ASM source. In particular, look at the source for
SLIP8250, which is a Packet Driver that talks over a serial port. Then look
at PACKET_D.109 to see what a Packet Driver is and why it is useful. These
files are also available for FReq (1:323/107) or download (+1 401 944 8498):
PKTD11.ZIP 426K 11-22-93 Clarkson/Crynwr packet drivers, v11 --
executables
                             and docs
PKTD11A.ZIP 320K 11-22-93 Clarkson/Crynwr packet drivers, v11 -- sources
1
                             of 3)
PKTD11B.ZIP 338K 11-22-93 Clarkson/Crynwr packet drivers, v11 -- sources
2
                             of 3)
PKTD11C.ZIP 81K 12-14-93 Clarkson/Crynwr packet drivers, v11 -- sources
3
                             of 3)
If you get this far, you might also want to pick up the old MIT/CMU DOS
networking package, for FReq (1:323/107) or download (+1 401 944 8498):
PCIP_ALL.ZIP 2594K 6-06-96 Complete set of PCIP freeware TCP/IP for DOS,
with
                             source and docs
If you are really serious about teaching yourself this stuff, then I suggest
that the best approach would be to run Linux. Since it is a whole Unix-clone
operating system with full network support and full source code, it allows
you to see a great deal without making you reinvent the wheel.
