I have used GeoFile for a Postcode database of over 13500 records. Size
of individual records could be a factor as these are, of course, quite
small.
When I tried to import the CSV file supplied by Australia Post, I found
that it locked up on my 286. Subsequently tried it on a 586 and
succeeded.
Other "cures" that seem to help:
MS/PC-DOS: FILES=100 (not 30) in CONFIG.SYS
DR/Novell DOS: FILES=120
In Preferences/GEOS set file handles to 3500 if not already, and try
increasing page and file sizes if you have at least 4MB of memory.
Disable SMARTDRIVE (or whatever disk cache you are using) if you do not
have more than 4MB of memory.
Always save (CTRL-S) BEFORE attempting to exit from GeoFile.
Export the data to a dBase file as a backup each time that you do major
work on a file so that you can reimport it if a file corrupts. Save a
copy of the file early on under another name so that you have the
layout. There is a copy and paste technique that can be used to put an
"imported" layout onto the imported data.
Best "cure"? That I think is up to the new republisher as I suspect that
GeoFile needs a little more work.
