There's a program called Polyxarc, that, when called, will detect the type
of archiving used and de-compress all files in a specified directory. I use
it for the exact purpose you mentioned.

Look for it on simtel mirrors or ftp.juge.com if you have FTP access,
otherwise, maybe someone closer to you will have it available for freq?
