subject: Sea Sickness

AK>Steve, Hi. I am facing difficulties going on boats since I suffer from
AK>sea-sickness. I tried not to eat or to take some thing very light before
AK>the trip, it did not work. I tried the pills, they did not work. What
AK>does it take to enjoy the boat trip without that ....... sickness ?
Hello, Ahmad.....
Thought I would interject here.......the physics of seasickness is
basically the same as airsickness or motion sickness.....a few
suggestions to try that I use as a aerobatic flight
instructor/competitor, modified for boating.......
1) Do NOT not eat......Eat a reasonable meal......light, not small, by
that I mean dont try to get by on one piece of toast. Dont stuff your
self full to the gills (scuse the pun ;-) but EAT....the content is
important......stay away from heavy, greasy foods, thats what is meant
by light. Allow a little time for the food to settle 1/2hour - hour or
so....
2) Super Hydrate......this means drink alot of water.....ALOT, not just
a glass or so before you get on the boat......but quarts, early before
the boating day begins, then continue thru-out the day.....
3) If you can stay to the rear of the boat.....its up and down motion
as well as swaying motion is less there.
4) Try to focas on the shore line, if it is within viewing range. This
will help prevent your eye to inner ear to brain connection from
becoming confused with the motion.....hopefully preventing that stomach
to mouth to boat rail connection =)
Try those, as well as some of the other suggestions you may get.
Everyone does react a differently. If all else fails, try seeing
your doctor, he or she may be able to help by prescribing something to
make the boat ride tolerable.
Hope this helps.......
good diving,
Craig
