I can't say anything for your museum project, but I can say for my hobby:
maintaining it doesn't take much resources, but does provide me with some
non-trivial ideas, so I keep it up and running.
Same applies to my other hobbies (caving, off-road driving etc.) as well.
Sometimes that applies even to my job: doing some side-work may serve me a
really good service.
