(well, all that I know) from piddling with it on my own.

Definitely a false fear.  The class is what makes C++ much easier to use 
(IMO) than C - the ability to do things when a variable (object) is 
initialized (constructed), when it goes out of scope (destructed), ... it's 
not scary - it's FRIENDLY!  :-)
