good morning.

may i mention that when i was young i used to record phone coversations by
simply using an induction coil (stuck on the the back of the phone with a
suction cup). 
this worked quite well.
the "beep" referred to is a beep introduced to the line by a
"recorder coupling device" fitted by telecom (or similar -
according to the law).

BE very careful how you USE this telephone "bugging" device.
from my memory the other party must be informed of the devices' existence
on the line and their consent (verbal) must be obtained.
