Since my newsreader threads based on References headers, I never noticed
that.

I think your system has translated the date headers to your localtime.
He's got a timezone in the header:
IBJoe> Date: Sun Sep 16 23:08:08 EDT 2018
Time now in EDT according to my localhost clock:
Mon Sep 17 18:35:34 EDT 2018
The Dumas post that sparked the reply has this date header:
AD> Date: 17 Sep 2018 19:11:27 GMT
Which in EDT was: Mon Sep 17 2018 15:11:27
So sometime between 15:11:27 and 18:35:34 (EDT on Sep 17), his clock
thought it was 23:08:08 EDT on Sep 16. That's quite a clock drift.

probably better to just set time by hand now, and *then* configure ntp
