I regularly toss 2M packets using Squish (not SQ386, never got around to
setting it up). Just gotta set the buffers high.

Hard to say. Seems about the same on my system (an 8M 386-40 with 4 of those
megs devoted to a disk cache). It does reduce disk thrash a lot, as all the
mail for a particular message area is getting tossed at the same time.
