elenews is the tosser/scanner for the news server, which is started from
eleserv -news.  The news server can be configured to require logons,
depending on the newsgroup settings in each message areas configuration.

elenews is an nntp interface for the system message base. If memory
serves it requires a login and checks the login against the user
database. As far as area names I don't recall if it passes them across
or does translations like changing spaces to . or _ or something. I'd
think it would but I don't remember.
